State urges Maui drivers to slow down after 2 nene killed by cars

HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – The state Department of Land and Natural Resources is warning drivers on Maui to slow down after two nene were killed on Sunday.
The endangered birds were hit in separate incidents.
DLNR officials said one of the birds was hit on Amala Place in Kahului, while the other was struck near the air cargo bypass of the airport.
Officials said this is the time of year that young nene start to explore new nesting sites.
They also remind the public that feeding protected wildlife is illegal and dangerous because the animals start to associate food with cars.
